The long long long road trip

In Shananigans on August 13, 2009 at 5:19 am

8-12-09 022Many months ago, Kris (mother-in-law), Katie (sister-in-law) and I had the idea of a road trip to Kentucky to visit Jenny (other sister-in-law) and her husband, Judd, and their new baby Ethan.  No one (Joey) thought we’d actually do it….but we did.  Oh yes, we did.

The trip got off to a rather rocky start when a cop pulled me over just outside of Evanston.  I was not aware that it’s a law to change lanes when there is an “emergency vehicle” pulled off to the side.  I just slowed down when I passed him.  Several minutes later, there he was pulling me over and yes, giving me a $100 ticket!  I was not a happy camper….still not, really.  But…the road trip went on.

We drove through Wyoming which was not very impressive and it was very windy.  Next, we hit Nebraska, where I first saw the largest statue of Jesus I’ve ever seen….and it was in the middle of a giant field.  Very wierd.  We made it to Kearney, Nebraska the first night and stayed in a nice hotel for some much needed rest.  It was a long day.

The next day we drove through some really heavy (and scary) rain storms through a bit of Ohio and then into Missouri.  We got to out hotel early enough for the kids to have a good swim….which they really needed after being cooped up in the car all day.

We stopped in St. Louis on day 3 where we got to go to the top of the “gateway to the west” arch in these little “pod” elevators.  If you ever get the chance to do this….don’t.  It really wasn’t worth the time that it took.  When we got to the top, there were just some tiny windows in a very narrow hallway.  Pretty lame.  The arch was cool to see though, and they had a cool museum.8-12-09 115

We took some back roads through Southern Illinois due to a huge traffic jam that we ran into and visited an Amish village in Indiana where we ate a delicious dinner.  It was delicious for everyone except Nate, that is.  He absolutely HATED it and had a scowl on his face the whole time.

We finally made it to Kentucky very late at night…but that didn’t stop us from cuddling a bit with cute baby Ethan.  Jenny, though very sleepy looking, seemed happy to see us and to show off her beautiful new baby.  Eventually, we did get off to bed and rested most of the next day, which was Jenny’s birthday.

One of the funniest moments of the trip was when we were getting up to leave Texas Roadhouse, where we had eaten Jenny’s birthday dinner.  Jenny went to grab her purse and much to her surprise, there was a giant rib stuck to it!  It was Nate’s.  We all had a good laugh about it.

During our exploration of the Kentucky/Ohio area, we got to go to a lot of neato stores.  I love love love to look at stores, so it was very fun for me.  We hit some outlet stores, a GIANT store called “Jungle Jims”, The Container Store, Crate & Barrel, and Trader Joes.  It was a lot of fun to get to go in stores that we don’t have in Utah. We also had a great photo shoot with all four kids which turned out really great.

After all the shopping, we decided to do something the kids might like, so we decided to visit the Cincinatti Zoo.  Unfortunately, I had the WORST headache of my life (it lasted nearly 24 hours) so I wasn’t able to enjoy the zoo to the fullest extent….but, it was a really cool zoo.  They had a lot of animals that I’ve never seen before….like bonobos….very similar to chimps.  Tessa loved petting the snakes and was the only one brave enough to do so.  As we walked in to see the Manitees, Nate asked, “Are manitees a species of aligator?”  Cute kids.8-12-09 032

On our last day in Kentucky, we decided to walk along the “purple people bridge” to say that we walked from Kentucky to Ohio in one day.  I thought that the area around the river was really beautiful.  I also liked to look at all the cool buildings and places around Cincinatti.  After the bridge, we stopped for a light dinner and then off to the Aquarium.  If any of you know of the aquarium that we have in Sandy…this aquarium was MUCH better than that one.  I was very impressed with it.  We got to feed nectar to some birds.  Just as one bit Tessa on the finger, another one pooped on my foot.  We tried hard not to laugh because Tessa was upset, but come on…pooping is funny, even if it was my foot.

We even got to pet some sharks!  Tessa and even Averi both got into it and loved it.  A very fun aquarium…so glad we went.

Our stay in Kentucky was so nice.  Judd and Jenny made us feel so welcome and were such great hosts.  Judd was even nice enough to cook for us and entertain Nate by playing video games with him.  I loved his hot wings, they were delicious.  He also made some “goeta”..this weird sausage stuff that Kentucky-ans like to eat.  It was pretty good.  And, best of all, they fed me strawberries.  Lots and lots of strawberries.  (I usually hate them, but this baby loves them)  So, thanks Judd and Jenny!  I had such a fun time.

8-12-09 040

The long 24 hour drive home was basically un-eventful except for the really terrible rain storm that we drove through (again).   Only this time, we had lots of lightning and thunder added to the enormous amounts of rain.  We stayed in Newton, Iowa and then Laramie, Wyoming.

There were a few things that really saved me on this trip:  My iphone, to keep in touch, connect us with the internet, and to help waste time in the car.  My navigation system, what did we ever do without it?  The DVD system in the car with about 24 kids movies, enough said.  And lastly, really great traveling companions…I love my in-laws!

This was the longest I think I’ve ever been away from Joe Joe…and it sure was nice to get home to see him again. The kids especially missed him and  I think I learned to better appreciate his company.  I think he missed us too.

Kie-Yak

In Shananigans on July 13, 2009 at 5:02 am

7-12-09 021We spent the weekend up at the cabin and much to my delight, we were able to go kayaking.  My in-laws, Kris and Bob recently bought these and were nice enough to let us try it out.

We took them up to Causey Dam and had a good time.  What a work out!  My arms are sure to be sore tomorrow.  I got a little discouraged about half way through our “trek”, thinking, why does this look so easy for Joey.  He always seems to take to things so well and I always seem to struggle.  Whenever I try to do anything “sporty” I always feel like everyone is staring and pointing at me; like I don’t really “fit in”.  But, I put my mind to it and actually got OUT of the kayak all by myself….without making a scene.  Yippee!

Unfortunately, I used the foot “pedals” of the kayak to try to situate myself better on the seat and broke both sides!  OOPS!  I felt just terrible.  Now we will have to see if we can replace the parts that I broke.  Hopefully, Kris will forgive me one day….she seemed pretty mad.  (no, just kidding)

I think that my in-laws are pretty hip for getting and using these kayaks.  I hope to one day be cool and sporty like them.

weeding with grandpa

I heard that my dad was going to be over at GeGe’s helping to weed her garden, so I thought that would be a perfect thing to do for our Thursday “service” day.  I didn’t tell my dad that we were coming and I think he was pleasantly surprised to see us. The kids were not really too helpful, but enjoyed raking and digging in the dirt; looking for worms.  They always enjoy a visit to grandma’s candy jar too.   After we finished with the weeds, we did a drive by at Wendys and enjoyed our lunch at Riverdale Park.  It was a nice time.  It’s so good to have my dad back.

my sweet new ride

In Shananigans on April 21, 2009 at 9:48 pm

4-21-09-0051

We picked up our sweet new ride last Thursday.  It’s a 2006 Honda Odyssey with leather seats, DVD player, navigation system and a back-up camera!  I LOVE it!!  The kids are hypnotized by the movies and they don’t fight anymore!  It’s gonna be so nice for our drive to DisneyLand in June and then to Kentucky in August.

We bought it at a place called “Totally Awesome Cars” in Clearfield….they are are not affiliated with SuperDell.  It was a very “casual” place with absolutely no pressure whatsoever.  They have very awesome prices, but the service is not so hot.  The owner, Josh, will not return my phone calls since we bought it.  I need to get the wheel lock key from him so we can get the new tires.  It is also lacking the owner’s manual.  I hope the good deal will be worth it in the end.

It’s Britney B*tch!

In Shananigans on April 20, 2009 at 10:11 pm

4-16-09-011Oops, I did it again!  Okay, I’ve never done this before, but I had to use that line.

Unbelievable as it may be, I attended the Britney Spears concert last week.   Before you start judging me…I did NOT pay for it!  Hayley got free tickets and aksed me if I wanted to go with her.  Much like my inability to look away from a car crash, I just couldn’t say no.  So, I got all “hootchied” up (as best I could) and went to the show.  When we got there, I discovered that everyone was a lot more “hootchie” than me.  I tried to take a picture of one of these girls, but it didn’t turn out.  There were MANY girls in “school girl” outfits.  I was also surprised at how many YOUNG children were at this concert. 4-16-09-005

As for the show, I’ll just say it was quite a “spectacle”.   Our seats were on the VERY tippy top near the ceiling, so this is the best shot of the Brit I got.  We also got to see the Pussy Cat Dolls.  They looked a lot like strippers to me.  I fell asleep a few times, but Hayley and a few of her friends from work REALLY liked the show.

4-16-09-016

I think that her friends may have been a bit tipsy?

After the show, I found an empty popcorn box with Britney’s name on it.  I thought it would make a lovely photo.  Hayley kept it ….for her scrap book, I guess?

I would just like to announce that I am in love.  In love with a mini-van.  It all started last night when I sold my car (after only 2 days, by the way…thanks KSL.com!).

Having the car gone, and after Nate’s birthday dinner, we decided to do some test drives to decide between Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey.  The Odyssey won.  I had the opportunity to drive THE coolest car ever and I am now in love.  In love with it’s leather seats that warm your bum, it’s DVD entertainment center, it’s power everything, it’s back-up camera that appears as if from nowhere, all of it’s luxurious features and most of all the smell!!!  Too bad that it’s too darn expensive for us to buy! I seriously dreamt of this van all night long.   Unfortunately, we (Joey) were not in love with the price of this beauty and we can’t get it.

It sure would be nice to buy one brand new, but I guess that I’ll have to settle for used luxury.  “sigh”

buying and selling

In Shananigans on April 12, 2009 at 10:54 pm

I am looking to sell my car so that I can get a mini-van.  Yes, I realize that I only have two children, but I still want one; don’t judge me.

I spent much of my spring break getting new tires, oil changed, full inspection and getting it detailed.  It is in really good shape and I’m now afraid to let my kids ride in it.

In case anyone out there is interested, we are selling it for $5,000 (if I know you or we are related, I’ll cut you a deal).  It’s a 2002 Mazda Protege 5 with 117,288 miles on it.  It’s in good condition, but has a little body damage.  Send me a comment if you’re interested!  4-12-09-113

4-2-09-082I was a bad grand-daughter and completely forgot my Grandma Ge Ge’s birthday until one week later!!  I know it’s a terrible excuse, but my mom usually reminds me.  I felt really really bad.  My grandma ALWAYS remembers my birthday.  I

The kids made gifts and we loaded up and headed to Riverdale for a visit.  Because my grandma is so awesome, she has forgiven my transgression and welcomed us with ice cream and cookies.

So, Happy Belated Birthday, Grandma!  I love you!

“hunting” for plastic eggs

In Shananigans on April 2, 2009 at 9:59 pm

3-30-09-010We attended the annual Best Buddies Utah 5K walk/run at Davis High on Saturday.  I am proud to say that I can run a mile…and walk the rest.

After the run, the kids had a “hunt” of sorts.  I think it’s funny that they call it a hunt, when in reality they just throw a bunch all over the big gym floor.  They should call it an Easter Egg “pick up”.

It was a fun day.  One of my students won 4th place, and was 1st place out of the students with disabilities.  He ran the entire thing in 28.32 minutes.  I signed him up for the track team on Monday.

3-23-09-008We went over to the Gillman’s on Saturday night to play a little poker.  I was the biggest loser, only in a bad way and was banished to the other room with the kids.  I successfully got them all to fall asleep and then fell asleep myself.  I later found this photo on my camera….not sure who took it?

Wendover

In Shananigans on March 23, 2009 at 3:20 pm

My good friend Ann Allred and I took a trip to Wendover on Friday to see Lily Tomlin perform.  We were very excited for our hot night out on the town.  We started off with a seafood buffet at the Rainbow and were DELIGHTED to discover that the crab legs were big, warm and “sawed” down the middle for easy access.  It was awesome.  We took pictures to make our husbands jealous.

After Lily amazed us with her amazing-ness, we hit the casino for some blackjack.  Ann Allred was new the game, but was addicted by the time the night was through.  I left with an extra $25 in my pocket….woo hoo!  We then retired to our room where we watched “The secret lives of Bees” on my portable DVD  player because we couldn’t get it hooked up to the tv.  We stayed up till 2 am and slept intill 10 am.  It was just like college.

fantastic John

In Shananigans on March 2, 2009 at 11:26 pm

3-2-09-0051We took a trip to Wendover this weekend to see the “Amazing Jonathan” or as I like to refer to him, “fantastic John”.  He is a comedian/ magician that Joey had seen on comedy central.  He puts on a show with a crazy lookin blonde named Tanya. He gave me some great ideas for practical jokes which I will soon play on all my co-workers!!

We ate at the buffet, played some blackjack, and slept in a hotel room WITHOUT any children.  (thanks Kris)  Even though the amazing John wasn’t that amazing, it was still fun to escape for a day and have some wild and crazy time with the husband.

sexy gonzo

In Shananigans on February 27, 2009 at 8:26 pm

For the last six years, I have been using a Cpap that I refer to as my “breathing machine”.  I have sleep apnea and it allows me to sleep AND breath at the same time.   From the first night that I received it, I have LOVED it dearly.  It is the greatest thing ever and I cannot live without it.

The past few months, it’s not been working properly and I could hear the motor dying.  I slowly got more and more tired and decided that I better look into getting a new one.  After a few hundred calls I finally got a new machine……and it’s so CUTE!!!  My old machine was at least twice it’s size and weight.  It also comes with a cute little “laptop” case to carry it in.

I put on the mask to show Joey and he said that I look like Gonzo.  I agreed that it does “sorta” look like Gonzo, but I’m sexier.

faculty faux pas

In Shananigans on February 23, 2009 at 10:44 pm

chris-buttarsThere were a few faculty members at today’s luncheon commenting on what a moron Chris Buttars is.  I can’t remember the exact words they were using to describe him, but they were not complimentary.  I listened for a bit and then casually added, “He’s my grandpa.  Chris Buttars is my grandpa.”

The looks on their faces……priceless.

About a blog

In Shananigans on January 27, 2009 at 5:00 am

I came home from step aerobics tonight and found Joey and the two munchkins on the floor  in deep meditation. They looked like little boodas and I thought it was so cute that I whipped my camera out to try to take a picture of it.  Joey suddenly cringed and hid his face, and the munchkins followed suit.

It seems that I’ve offended a few people in recent days, Joey being one of them.  He let me know that he does not appreciate me “bad mouthing” him on my blog and he doesn’t want to be on my blog anymore.  He also said that his friends are offended with my words and that not everyone “gets” my sense of humor.  I went to take a shower and I contemplated what he had said.

I  started this blog a few months ago for a few reasons.  1)  I wanted to take more pictures and thought that a blog might give me a reason to work on that goal. 2)  I thought it might be a nice outlet for some of my thoughts and feelings.  3)  I might feel more important if I knew that other people cared about my life.  4) I thought it might be fun to show others how darn funny I am (okay, not really).  I really thought it might help my self esteem and out of the pit of despair that I felt I was falling into.

Like most things that I undertake, I have gone full throttle with my blog, and some might say “obsessed”.  Mostly I was just trying to disprove Joey’s prediction that I would not keep it up. However, it HAS improved my self esteem, I HAVE taken a lot more pictures, it HAS made me feel better, and it IS really funny if you have a sense of humor. I have really enjoyed writing in my blog and I “think” that a lot of people have enjoyed reading it as well.

My high school counselor once asked me “where all this sarcasm is coming from?”  She didn’t know me very well.  I am a very sarcastic person and I use sarcasm to “tease” people.  The good news is that I only “tease” people that really like and I “tease” myself as well.  The trouble with my sarcasm, as Joey made me understand, is that it doesn’t really come across well on a blog.  Some of you, including Joey, have been offended, and I feel bad about that .  I am truly sorry.  The truth is that Joey and he who shall not be named are two of my favorite people and two of the people I feel I can act myself around.

With that being said, I cannot just walk into the living room to find my husband “talking” to his video game very loudly, while wearing a “headset”, saying very silly sounding things and NOT make fun of it.  I mean,  come on!  I calls ‘em likes I sees ‘em….and I sees that it’s very very funny.

rebels

In Shananigans on January 25, 2009 at 4:48 pm

couches-0011Hayley and I went to the movies on Friday night.  We went to the Tower Theatres and we both commented on the “different” people that attend that theatre.  They are not your “normal” Utah crowd, and we kind of liked it.

We went to see “Revolutionary Road”, which looked a lot better than it acutally was.  It was kind of boring in some spots and I didn’t really “feel” for the characters, perhaps because I didn’t live in the 50’s.

After the movie was over, Hayley sheepishly asked if I wanted to stay for ANOTHER movie…it was 9:00 pm at this time.  I gave her an evil laugh and said “yes, we are such rebels”.  And we were.  We stayed for “Slumdog Millionaire”, got lots of refills on our drinks, and stayed up way past our bedtimes.

I must say that Slumdog was the best movie I’ve seen in awhile…I’m glad we stayed.

fun at Willey’s

In Shananigans on January 13, 2009 at 9:47 pm

1-12-09-002Joey and I decided that we’d like to find ourselves a nice sectional for our living room to make more use of the space.  That was about the only thing we agreed on, however.  You see, Joey would really like a “comfortable” couch with all sorts of poof , built in recliners, and cup holders.  The kind of thing that you might see in a rich person’s “home theatre”.  Me, on the other hand, I would definitely sacrifice the comfortable part as long as it looks cute and matches my living room.  I do not care for the unsightly sectionals that Joey falls in love with.

So, we spent the day looking at a few stores to try to come to a compromise.  We didn’t find anything too special.  Nater REALLY enjoyed himself on this massage chair, though.  I told Joey that we could definitely NOT put that in our living room.

I made a trip to Roy OATC beauty school where my friend Lacey attends.  She has been my favorite hair cutter-rupper for the last two years.  I’ve been getting basically the same haircut every time, but last night we mixed it up a little.  It’s a little shorter, more trendy and hawt, I might add.

Sequence This

In Shananigans on January 1, 2009 at 6:27 pm

dscn0530Traditionally, for the last five years, we have gone over to Ann Allred’s house for a Sequence tournament on New Year’s Eve.  Ann Allred invites about eight couples and all their children over for appetizers and some healthy competition.  There is always a little trash talk.  The winner of the tournament gets a giant glass “cup” filled with treats and things.  The winners of past years are written on the side of the cup and we are proud to have our name written there twice.

During the summer, Joey noticed an add in the Sequence box for odering your own Sequence t-shirt.  He thought it would be funny to wear them to the party.  I am too cheap, however, and decided to make my own.  They turned out pretty great, if I do say so myself.  You can’t tell from the picture, but at the bottom they read, “Table talk is not necessary, It’s all skill now”.  Everyone got a kick out of our t-shirts.  I heard some of the newcomers to the tournament say, “Oh no, now we have to play the ones with the t-shirts”. I think they were intimidated by us.

Well, we didn’t win the tournament this year, but we cam in second place.  The Rockwells took it.  That’s ok, I filled the cup with all the leftover candy that I didn’t want anyway.

Baby shower

In Shananigans on December 24, 2008 at 6:30 pm

We had a baby shower for Jenny.  She isn’t having her baby until June, but we aren’t likely to see her and thought it would be good to have one while she’s here.  Unfortunately, it snowed and everyone was too afraid to go out into the snow to come to the shower.  Not a single person, other than us, showed up.

I was especially disappointed that my blog fan, Holly, didn’t come.  She would have added a lot to the party because she is so awesome. I also made her a Christmas gift that I thought she’d like, but didn’t get to give it to her.

Well, we had fun without them. We had some taco salads that were easy, yet delicious.  Did I mention that I drove from Bountiful to Ogden (with two children) to get there?

12-22-08-072My sister and brother inlaws, Jenny and Judd , are in town for Christmas.  Joey actually introduced the two of them.  Judd had been his long time friend and Jenny is his step-sister.  After Judd got rid of his religious ideals, Joey figured that they should meet.  They have been living in Kentucky and we don’t get to see them very often.  Judd suggested that all the “friends”  get together for a little slice and dice at Bennihanas.

We have a lot of memories at Bennihanas, which we brought up over dinner.  One of my fondest memories was when I was pregnant (very pregnant) with Tessa.  I had licked my plate clean and I was still SO hungry that I then ordered a pizza from the piano bar that we attended.  I finished that off with some cheesecake.  Tessa was a VERY hungry baby.

Another fun time was at the Bennihanas in Vegas.  Judd decided to pay for the girl that he didn’t like’s dinner, while the girl that he did like paid for her own.  Judd used to be a little mixed up with women.

Women be shoppin’

In Shananigans on November 30, 2008 at 5:07 am

11-29-08-105I ventured out into the black friday mess at about 8:30 am.  This is a very late time for most of these people, but I only needed to go to JoAnns.  I needed to purchase some fabric for a special project.  I saved $35, but I had to spend an hour in line.  I was surrounded by ladies that were buying way too much flannel for their own good.

My brave sister decided to visit Target at 6:00 am followed by ShopKo.  She said that despite the crowds, she had the enjoyed the thrill of the hunt. She witness a lady ”rush” the doors , having to be tackled by the security guard. It seems that everyone’s getting into the Christmas spirit.

Anyone that knows me fairly well knows that I don’t like to read unless I have to.  It’s just not an enjoyable thing for me, mostly because you have to concentrate and sit in one place.  Watching a movie is much easier, in my opinion.

Occasionally, a book will come my way that catches my attention.  Usually these books are not fictional, but historical or biographical.  This time, however it’s fictional and about vampires.  I’m so embarrassed to admit it, but I have hopped on the “Twilight” band wagon.  I have to admit, this book is very interesting and has held my attention for 197 pages so far.  Joe Joe was so stunned to see me reading before bedtime, that he snapped this photo and told me that it was definitely blog material.

In Shananigans on October 31, 2008 at 3:10 am

Ok, I’ve been “tagged” by my sister, Katie. I was unsure what this meant, but apparently, I’ve got to tell about 7 unusual things about myself.  Luckily, I’m a very unusual person, so this won’t be a problem.

1.  I collect rubber chickens.  It all started when my Grandma Ge Ge gave me one.  I have about 50 of them and I keep most of them in my classroom.

2.  I have a “handle” on the back of my head.  If I were to ever loose my hair, I would have a big bump back there and I bet it wouldn’t be very attractive.

3.  I have a bottom-less belly button.  I have actually stuck an entire q-tip in there and it nearly got lost!!!

4.  I smell strange things.  For example, I play with my earrings and then I take a “sniff”.  Yes, it’s disgusting, I don’t know why I do it.  I can’t help myself!

5.  I have recently become obsessed with buying and selling things on ksl.com.  I love to just browse the classifieds and I can do it for hours at a time.  It’s like a giant online yard sale!!  But unlike a traditional yard sale, I can look at only what I want and do it in my pajamas if I like.  I also make money from the stuff that I normally would have taken to the D.I.  ksl.com……I love you.

6.  I have become a coupon queen.  If I buy something without a coupon, I feel sick inside.  I get high from an extraordinary shopping experience in which I get an entire cart of groceries for only $30.  It makes me so happy inside.

7.  I have reoccurring dreams about my teeth falling out.  It is very creepy.

That’s it….just seven of the many things that are wrong, I mean unusual about me.  Now I tag Joey and Jana.
